iNet Network Scanner App Reviews

pretty useful

Solid complement to Apple Remote Desktop. I use this mainly as a way to monitor Bonjour advertisements, esp from my virtual machines. It does this fairly well. It sorely needs a way to control the overall speed of the network scans.

Cached results ruin this program

Ive used iNet for over a year now. While it has some redeeming qualities, simple interface, quick configuration, there are some issues that I can no longer tolerate. The most annyoing is the cached results that appear no matter how many times the cache is cleared. I had an issue with my DHCP server and while it was down, I assigned static IP addresses to a handful of machines that were required to troubleshoot the issue. After the problem was resolved, the server restarted, machines reconfigured for DHCP, and cache cleared from iNet those static IP addresses still show in iNet matched with the MAC addresses of the machines, despite the machines having received new IP addresses from the DHCP server (which coincidentally DONT show). Secondly, Ive had to pay for the iPhone app (originally downloaded as trial and upgraded via in-app purchase) each time Ive had to download it and upgrade to Pro, despite their claims of no double charges. All in all, nice try but until these issues are resolved Ill go find an IP scanner that works.

Its ok at best.

Very basic functionality. Lacks many obvious features. Has potential but I would not reccomend one waste their time. Has not been updated for the new airport express (ie SNMP).

No updates

This app doesn’t recognize the latest Time Capsule. I ask for refund.

Should Be Better, But Developer Unresponsive

I bought this with the understanding that it wouldn’t properly monitor the newest AirPort Extreme device due to a lack of SNMP support, but that was fine with me as I don’t use that device. What I didn’t count on, however, was that this app won’t properly identify several Apple devices on my network, including an iPhone 5s and a late 2013 iMac. All in all, the app works fairly well with the older devices (including Windows devices), but newer devices seem to throw it for a loop. Even my AirPort Express isn’t properly identified. For example, the AirPort Express defaults to using the wrong icon, and the vendor is listed as “unknown.” The late 2013 iMac shows “unknown” for the MAC address and, as a result, I can’t edit the record for the computer. My iPhone 5s and iPad Mini with Retina both show the vendor as “unknown.” Amazingly enough, my BlackBerry Q10 shows up correctly. Go figure. Lastly, the app doesn’t seem to remember window size or position correctly. All of that would be ok (assuming updates were on the way) except that I have attempted to contact the developer via e-mail and via Twitter, and as of yet (several days later) I have not received any response or acknowledgement. Because the app was last updated in May, and because the developer doesn’t seem terribly interested in following-up with my support requests, I can only conclude that this app is no longer actively developed. So, in short: I would steer clear of this app and look for something with better support from the developer.

Not Responding… Thats all this app is good for.

I ran 1 scan with this App and now it is practically useless. It went Not Responding while adding a favorite manually and now every time I open it up I get a spinning beachball. Waste of $8 I feel. Crashed constatly during the process of the first scan. The scanning is slow compared to how fast Apple Remote Desktop can scan a Local Connection. It’s a pain to add favorites since you can’t right click and say “Add Favorite” or select more than one item at a time. To add a favorite you have to drag 1 by 1 though a huge list and go back down to find the next favorite you want, or you can add the manually by entering the entire MAC Address, IP Address, Subnet and Name of the device (which is just as difficult).

Lame

It doesn’t really tell you anything it claims to - Sure, it lists a few mac addresses, but it can’t seem to identify anything… ANYTHING. It’s all listed as UNKNOWN VENDOR - including the computer that the app is running on… Waste of money for sure.

Ruined...

The caching system that iNet uses is apparently written by a 2 year old. It never clears. Ever. Even after an un-install. Nice work geniuses

Useful little utility

I use a central file server and Apple’s sharing capabilities are sometimes intransigent. If the server goes away in the Finder it will not come back without rebooting the client. The Bonjour tab in iNet has a connect button that forces my client to go out and connect to the server which once again shows up in Finder. I’m an occasionaly user of this app but that one feature is proving to be extremely useful.

Out of Date, but still solid for finding IP and MAC addresses

Airport Utility 6.x does not list the MAC addresses of eithernet attached devices, but iNet does. iNet works great at identifying what is on the network, its IP, and its MAC. Other than that, it is tragicly unaware of most Apple devices and the interface shows it has been a long time since it was updated. For $8 it was worth it for me. I just wish it could do more and be better. Update 10.9: Release notes indicated improvement in the vendor dB. I checked again and it did not know about an Airport Extreme as an apple product, nor that my Netgear device was a NAS, my Hewlett Packard device was a printer, nor that by unknown device is a Foscam camera. Still worth $8, but I still wish it was better.

Memory Hog

Love the app I use it to monitor bandwidth in my apartment as well as make sure no one is leeching wifi…but my big complaint is it is a huge memory hog..uses 1+GB of RAM at times just when open….this app would be more useful if the memory usage could be checked, otherwise i woud reccomend this app

Very useful and good app but...

Can you please update the devices? It does not recognize the newest Airport Extreme!!

It worked great until Apple dropped support for SNMP monitoring.

This app will be worthless since apple dropped support for snmp monitoring on new routers. :(

Works but needs updates

For 8 dollars it’s still a good product but like the other reviewer, it feels slightly dated

Quality tool

fast, clean and handy. Does what it’s supposed to very well. It’s proven very useful and become a must have tool for anyone who configures network devices or just needs to know what’s on the local network.

Works well

Since Apple removed the ability to see wired devices in the airport utilty, I’ve been struggling to find something to replace that needed functionality. This app works like a charm and found the NAS (Network Attached Storage) that I’ve been having trouble connecting to without any issues. Saved me tons of time using terminal looking at tons of information that clouded the picture. Highly recommended app!

Product Failure

Does not work properly with newer Airport devices. I dont even understand why you would continue selling if the core features do not work with modern devices. And thanks for stealing my 8 bucks!

Awesome

Great, easy to use interface and tons of information to get a handle on your home network. Please keep updating it — it is an essential tool.

An excellent app

I’ve owned and used this app for some time now and have found it to be the best network analysis app in the Mac App store. I updated to the current release a few days ago and have noticed a marked improvement in stability and performance on Yosemite (this app has not historically had any stability issues but something was wonky on Yosemite). If you’re looking for an app to monitor and understand your network iNet is an excellent choice.

Still the best

I’ve used a lot of network scanners and analyzers and I really like this one. It’s simple yet gets all the information I need, lets me annotate names where necessary, and provides wake on lan support. I love the airport analysis it can do on an SNMP-enabled airport. This version works well with Yosemite and iNet continues to be my goto network analysis app.
